Fast Start Campout

Planned for April 25th - 26th 2009

Trip Leaders:  Mr. Moore/Mr. Saba

Location: Usery Mountain Park - This is our annual campout to introduce new Scouts to camping with Troop 278 & to support their completion of the Scout rank requirements and most of the Tenderfoot requirements to get them off to a "Fast Start" in Scouting!

Parents - especially new Scout parents - are very welcome to attend the camp to get used to the Troop and to meet other Scout families and leaders - please do come.

This is a convenient location but still a little away from it all - with great views of the Usery & Superstition Mountains.

We will likely have time to try out a little archery and some hiking on the great park trails to burn off some energy to balance our time spent in our classroom of the outdoors where we will be learning & practicing new Scout skills and getting them signed off - for experienced Scouts its a chance to teach the skills you've learned!

Post Activity Report:
We had a great turn out of new and experienced Scouts for Fast Sart 2009 - 32 Scouts and 18 Adults! We started in this new location with a nice hIke up the popular WInd Cave Trail where we found a colony of bees up in the rocks. The 'Wind Cave' lived up to its name with pleasant shade, cooling breezes and great views on this warm day. Relocating to our group campsite we set-up camp raised the flag and started on skills instruction for Tenderfoot skills. Thanks to our Scout instructors for a great job on skills!! We took some timeouts for fun - then after flag lowering we prepared a communal meal of BBQ burgers & hot dogs with all the fixings plus sweetcorn, beans & garlic bread with baked cinnamon/rasin apples for desert.

Our evening plans for a campfire could have been impacted buy a no-burn day - but we improvised with a gas lantern and carried on anyway!... The older scouts put on a great campfire program - great skits, jokes & stories...

Our night was interrupted by the super bright lights and noisy music of an MTV video production on the adjacent mountain - who could have guessed...

On Sunday we had a great pancake breakfast with scrambled eggs, bacon, peppers & mushroioms and finished up our instruction before heading home. A great trip to a new fast Start location!

Another successful Troop 278 Fast Start!
