Scoutmaster Conference (SMC): A Scoutmaster conference is a meeting between a Scout and the Scoutmaster* to check that all the requirements for rank advancement were met and to discuss the Scouts adherence to the Scouting Law/Oath/Motto & Slogan and discuss further rank advancements, service & leadership opportunities. (* in some cases an experienced Assistant Scoutmaster - but usually only for the lower ranks) Scheduling yourself into a SMC: Make sure your SMC is scheduled before the Board of Review you wish to attend - preferably several weeks before. See if there is an SMC calendar slot scheduled by the Scoutmaster and try to be ready for that slot, contact the Scoutmaster to either reserve an available scheduled slot or see if the Scoutmaster can meet with you at some other time. try to plan at least a week ahead of the time you need to meet. How to Prepare & What To Expect: The SMC is not for individual requirements sign-off or for training or refresh on the requirements. make sure all requirements are already signed off except Scoutmaster Conference & Board of Review. By the time you attend the SMC you should be ready to discuss and demonstrate all the rank requirements and to be able to recite from memory the Scout: Oath/Law/Motto/Slogan and Outdoor code. Ensure you are familiar with all your sign offs - when they occurred (e.g. of a particular campout and what you did). For skills be ready to explain or demonstrate all the requirements. The requirements of upper ranks include all the previous ranks requirements also - so brush up on those too...For requirements where the handbook shows multiple methods - you must know at least one. For items that require you to list or document things - you may bring along any supporting items you used for the initial requirement. You must attend a SMC in full uniform - with all correct insignia - this is part of the evaluation of readiness for the Board of Review - the next step in granting your new rank. Bring your Scout Handbook to the SMC so that requirements can be checked & the SMC requirement can be signed-off in your book. Be ready to discuss Leadership Positions held, Service Projects & Troop Fundraisers you have supported - bring a list if you like. Pre-scheduled SMC's will most likely be held in the Community Room of Phoenix Fire Station (#43) on the North side of Chandler Blvd opposite the Safeway Plaza at 40th St. (park on the west side). Parents will need to wait while their son meets with the Scoutmaster - except if there are multiple Scoutmasters/assistants attending. A Scoutmaster conference will vary in length depending on rank - approximately 30 minutes for a Tenderfoot to approximately an hour at 1st class and above. The Scoutmaster will provide hints & encouragement and in some instances examples & chances to review the handbook content briefly - but the Scout must ultimately be able to demonstrate the skills themselves or the SMC will have to be rescheduled. The amount of help offered will be reduced at more senior ranks. Check the Preparation Checklists (buttons to left) for each rank and prepare appropriately. These are the same things you need to do to prepare for the Board of Review. Here's a map*
